The Truth about Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate

date-rape-drink

Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a drug that is known as “liquid ecstasy”. It is popular for partygoers. Colloquially GHB is also called date rape. With this, partygoers need to be cautious when they get their drinks because it might contain GHB. Here in Singapore, GHB is banned. No one should use it unless prescribed by your doctors.

GHB is not pure evil. Before it was banned, it was used as a depressant. It can treat sleep disorders and stimulate fat reduction and development of muscles. GHB is also used for weight loss. The most notable about GHB is that it can provide relief of fibromyalgia symptoms like pain and fatigue. It does not end there, it can also be used as a dietary supplement which can promote relaxation. For people who have addictions, GHB can be used to assist them in terms of managing their withdrawal symptoms.

However, using it often will lead to addiction and eventually crime (referring to date rape). The drug is unnoticeable, colourless and odourless. You should know that small amount of GHB (2 to 4 grams) can make anyone fall asleep. Partygoers always worry for GHB.

There are methods that can detect GHB but it takes time. The good news is that a group of scientists from National University of Singapore found a way to detect GHB instantly. The group is hoping to make their discovery available in the market. If the scientists are successful to market the product, it will be available within the year. We will have to wait and see.
